Denver Motivational Speakers – Presenting with Magic

Denver Motivational Speakers

When I first started out in speaking someone recommended a book to me. It was entitled “Presenting and Training with Magic” by Ed Rose. It’s designed for magicians who want to get into speaking and or speakers who want to add a little magic into their program. But my take on it is that any speaker would benefit from this book as there are tons of speaker tips and ideas especially for those who are fairly new to the world of speaking.

So check if you are wanting to be a speaker or still fairly new I would highly recommend this book for you.

Best regards,

Keir

Keynotes – Feeding your “Speaker Mentality”

Keynotes

One thing I have blogged about recently is acquiring a “Speaker Mentality”. When you truly feel like a speaker you notice stories for your keynotes everywhere. There are so many things going on around you every week that likely make great stories to speak about. And when you are “in the speaker zone” you will recognize them and use them in your program.

Now if you are new to speaking and or want to be a speaker (which are often times just one speech away from being the same thing) then you might want to invest in some promotional material. Having some professional photos taken, getting new business cards and a website might really light a fire under you. And being able to see yourself in the role of speaker (another great reason to have a quality photo on your card by the way) will allow you to see many of the stories that you would otherwise be walking right by with out a second glance. Additionally there are tons of stories from your past that can be adapted to suit many different topics/points for your keynotes.

So if you are needing some inspiration, book yourself to speak at some Rotary Clubs and get some new promotional material. If you wake up feeling like a speaker, you will start seeing what you’ve been missing and writing some of the best keynotes imaginable.

Best regards,

Keir

Motivational Speaker Denver – Don’t Go It Alone Speaking to Service Clubs!

Motivational Speaker Denver

The following is an excerpt from “Coffee Cups, Pens And Other Things I’ve Picked Up Along the Way” by Keir Mathur (a booklet on getting started speaking to service clubs)

So if your out there actively speaking to service clubs like Rotary, Optimists etc. then you know it can take a lot of leg work just to get in the door to do a free speech. And while I never really like to think of them as freebies because I try to always focus on the business I am getting from it, let’s face it.  You get up at 5 something AM to speak for no more direct payment than a free plate of bacon and eggs.

What to do… well, “don’t go it alone”! Form a group of two or more speakers. And every time you go out and speak to a club, leave the business card of your fellow speaker(s) and tell them all about what they speak on. Get out and hear your colleagues speak so that you can really talk about their programs with sincere enthusiasm. Then when you get home, CC an email to both the person that booked you for the speaking engagement and to your “group”. This way your fellow speakers have an easy path to get booked for the same club. And if everyone in your group does the same for everyone else, soon you will have twice, three times or quadruple (depending on how many people are in your group) the bookings with minimal calling and emailing.

This one’s a “no brainer” folks, all you have to do is form up with one or more speakers and stick with it. In some cases it helps to email each other every week even if you have not spoken to anyone recently just to remind everyone that you still exist and keep the habit going strong. After all, it’s all about forming a new habit of doing this and in no time you will have way more speaking engagements.

Until next time…

Motivational Speaker Denver – Developing Material to Speak About

Motivational Speaker Denver

The following is an excerpt from “Coffee Cups, Pens And Other Things I’ve Picked Up Along the Way” by Keir Mathur (a booklet on getting started speaking to service clubs)

Developing a Speaker Mentality…

A lot of people ask me how it is that I develop material to speak about. Well the truth is, “it comes to me in a dream”… well in a way really it does. You see when you have a speaker mentality you see things all around you that make for great content. Kind of like a stand up comedian, when a comedian is working a lot and into their job, they see funny stuff everywhere that fits into their act. The same thing applies to speakers, so when good content pops into your head write it down ASAP! I have a notepad in my iPhone that works well for this very thing.

The truth is that there are stories happening all around you that make great speaking material. Additionally there are even more in your past. The trick is to recognize them and again to write them down immediately! Don’t over think them, these don’t have to be notes of wisdom from Socrates. Sometimes just a lighthearted and slightly funny, inspiring and or clever thing that you noticed about life. And many times one story can be adapted to fit many different speaking topics.

Two of my favorite places for inspiration are the library and thrift stores. I go to the library and grab documentaries on anything and everything. The other day I got one on “Keys to Mastering Life”, another on “forgiveness” and another one about a guy that was incredibly smart. The first video was pretty useless (but that’s ok, the price was right) the second one on forgiveness led me to some new points to add to my Conflict Resolution presentation. And the last one inspired a thought to put in my Memory Magic program. Not bad for FREE huh? And for a whopping $3 I walked out of a thrift store with an audio course on memory and how to improve it that has already triggered two unique ideas for my presentation. Notice I said unique, I am not taking other people’s material but allowing my mind to absorb what they are saying and go in a new direction with it. I love to read Chicken Soup for the Soul books (also available at both the library and many thrift stores btw) but I don’t use other people’s stories in my program. Instead I allow their stories to jar my memory of my past events and connect them to a message in my program. So don’t “Chicken Soup” it by trying to get on the platform and telling someone else’s story but do allow their stories to remind you of past events in your life. Keep in mind you may have to read dozens of stories before inspiration strikes, so don’t open a book with any expectations. Just enjoy the book and wait for inspiration to strike!

So there you have it… what are you waiting for? Go get inspired!

Best,

Keir Mathur

Motivational Speaker Denver – Memory Magic Association

Motivational Speaker Denver

One of the fun things that I do in my Memory Magic program is to show people how to use word association to remember things. ie: to remember that someone’s name is Bob, picture him bobbing up and down, or if a ladies name is Sue, imagine her as a lawsuit happy lawyer running around slapping frivolous suits on people. This is nothing new, but I have a knack for it and love to share this skill with people.

One thing I came up with recently is to make a list of 10 (or more if you like) things that you are thankful for. These don’t have to be really significant things like winning the Nobel Peace Prize… My list has things like, “having been raised by great parents”, “being able to SCUBA dive” and “my 3 year old niece”. You get the idea anyway, anything that you can think of really.

Next, make a list of 10 things that you see on a regular basis. A park bench, a taxi cab or someone out walking a dog. Now both on paper and in your mind, pair each item that you are thankful for with one of these objects and make a concentrated effort for the next day or so to really focus on the “thing that you are thankful for” when you see each of the corresponding items. Before long it will become habit and you subconsciously be reminded of these “thankful” things all the time.

You could make lists of “things that remind you that you are successful”, “things that make you attractive to the opposite sex” (supposing your single that is) etc. and soon you will exude confidence and happiness so much more as you travel around town seeing all the signs that remind you of how great your life is.

Memory Magic

Memory Magic

For a while now I’ve been speaking on “Memory Magic” and how to retain things you want to remember. Today I spoke to the Arvada, CO Kiwanis Club at the Arvada Center. A great group of about 60 people, which is perfect as I had about 20 minutes to meet and greet before my program began and I wanted to show off a little as usual by calling out everyone individually by first name at the beginning of my program. This always gives a great first impression and gets things underway nicely.

In any event, my Memory Magic program is really taking shape nicely and I had a flood of people waiting for me after I spoke to leave me their business card and or sign up on my email list so I am really starting to feel the momentum of the improvements I have made since starting this program. Memory Magic

I am really looking forward to getting this all made into a downloadable course that people can buy so stay tuned for more info. on that.

Best regards,

Keir

Public Speaking – Speaking at service clubs

Public Speaking

public speaking, motivational speakerCurrently I am doing a lot of speaking both for paid corporate clients and also free of charge at service clubs. Taking my good friend Joe Sabah’s advice from Cavett Robert who was well known for saying “don’t eat the peel and throw away the banana” I always try to get contact info from as many people as possible especially when  I am speaking for free.

One way I have found to do this is to offer attendees at service clubs something in exchange for their e-mail etc. Being that I am a magician and that I often use some magic “tricks” in my program, I demonstrate a magic effect/trick that is very easy and inexpensive to make and then perform it. I am sure to include a message in the magic so that it still fits into the theme of the program while delivering a message. Then at the end of the program I offer one of these tricks free of charge when they sign up with their contact info.

Now I have a handful of business cards and some emails on my sign up sheet every time I go out and speak.

For more information on what I do as a motivational speaker, check out http://www.DenverMotivationalSpeaker.com

Thanks!
